The Classical and the other side of Greece

Prehistory, the Classical Period, Roman domination, The Byzantine Empire, the Crusades and Modern Times: Greece through the centuries will unfold before you on these 7 days – 6 nights tour.

 

1st day: Leave by the coastal road to the Corinth Canal (short stop). Drive on and visit the Theatre of Epidaurus, famous for its remarkable acoustics. Then proceed to the Town of Nauplion (short stop) drive on to Mycenae and visit the Archaeological Site and the Tomb of Agamemnon. Then depart for Olympia through Central Peloponnesus and the towns of Tripolis and Megalopolis. Overnight in Olympia, the cradle of the Olympic Games. Dinner and overnight.

2nd day: In the morning visit the Archaeological Site with the sanctuary of Olympian Zeus, the Ancient Stadium and the Archaeological Museum. Then drive on through the plains of Iliad and Achaia until the magnificent bridge which is crossing the Corinthian Bay from Rion to Antirion. Pass by the picturesque towns of Nafpaktos (Lepanto) and Itea, arrive in Delphi. Dinner and overnight.

3rd day: In the morning visit the Archaeological Site and the Museum. Depart for Kalambaka, a small town situated at the foot of the astonishing complex of Meteora, gigantic rocks. Dinner and overnight.

4th day: Visit Meteora, among striking scenery, perched on top of huge rocks which seem to be suspended in mid air, stand ageless Monasteries, where you can see exquisite specimens of Byzantine Art. Depart from Kalambaka, drive through Trikala and Larissa, arrive and visit the Archaeological Site of Dion. Admire also from here the gigantic figure of mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece and home of the 12 Gods 9greek Mythology). After the visit depart for the town of Naoussa. Dinner and overnight.

5th day: Depart in the morning for the town of Kastoria the Greek center of the fur industry and also famous for its beautiful lake. A pre historic lake settlement 7000 years old, was discovered here and you will admire the rare findings in the tiny local Museum together with the recreation of the Old Settlement. After the visit of Kastoria continue driving and arrive in the picturesque town of Edessa. Here you can seat next to the town’s famous Landmark, the waterfall and enjoy a drink or a cup of coffee. Return to Naoussa. Dinner and overnight.

6th day: Leave in the morning for Pella, the ancient Capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia. Visit the site and depart for Thessaloniki, the second largest city of Greece. Visit the city and the Archaeological Museum. Return to Naoussa. Dinner and overnight.

7th day: Depart from Naoussa in the morning and since the area is famous for the production of some of the finest wines in Greece, we shall make a very interesting visit to the local “Boutari” winery and then drive to Vergina. Visit the very important museum with all the astonishing and priceless findings belonging to the Macedonian civilization which recent excavations brought to light. Here we shall also view the remains of King Philip’s (father of Alexander the Great) Palace. After the visit we shall start driving south and through the Valley of Tempi, Lamia, Thermopylae (short stop for picture at the Leonida’s monument) and Kammena Vourla, arrive in Athens late in the afternoon.
